TESTA PRODUCE

FIRST LEED-PLATINUM REFRIGERATED FOOD DISTRIBUTION FACILITY IN THE UNITED STATES

  • Location: Chicago, IL
  • Application: DHW for showers, kitchen and cafeteria
  • Gross collector area: 32 m² // 345 ft²
  • Commissioning: January 2011

Testa Produce’s new refrigerated facility in South Chicago, IL is the first LEED-Platinum certified food distribution facility in the USA. The “LEED-Program” (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a rating system for high performance green buildings and the Platinum certificate is the highest rating attainable. In addition to the solar thermal system the building has a rain water recovery tank for gray water use, a green roof to reduce the cooling load, a wind turbine and a PV system.

The solar thermal system consists of ten Ritter evacuated tube collectors which are mounted in banks of five collectors in series. The collectors are located on the roof directly above the boiler room, which has a clear site line to the downtown Chicago skyline. The solar thermal system feeds in parallel with a gas-condensing boiler to the domestic hot water tank. The solar loop is separated from the potable water via an external plate heat exchanger.

The minimum solar supply temperature is set to 60°C // 140°F since the domestic hot water tank also supplies a dishwasher. The expected solar fraction at a solar supply temperature of 60°C // 140°F is 620 kWh/m²a // 200 kBtu/ft²a.
