Shopping Center Istanbul

Cooling the Metro Shopping Mall with evacuated tube collectors

  • Building constructed in 2009
  • Location: Istanbul, Turkey
  • The high temperature collectors drive an absorption refrigerator made by Carrier / Sanyo
  • Collector area: 1,031 m²
  • Came into operation: July 2009

When designing the Meydan Merter Shopping Centre, the renowned Turkish architect Murat Tabanlioglu included a solar cooling system. 1,200 evacuated tube collectors, mounted on the roof of the shopping center, provide air-conditioning for 30,000 m² of shop floor space. The hot water from the Paradigma collectors powers an absorption refrigerator, which in turn produces the cold water needed to cool the air.

As winter in Istanbul is often bitterly cold, the solar heat can also be used to heat the shopping center. Conventional electric air-conditioning systems have a truly immense appetite for power. In contrast, this system is environment-friendly. The collectors supply 770 MWh of solar energy every year, reducing the annual CO2 emissions by 308 tonnes. LEW Automotive GmbH (from Urbach, Baden-Württemberg) installed the solar thermal system within 3 months.
